Have you ever seen somebody entering a room and just thought, “Wow, I wish I had that kind of confidence”? You’re definitely not alone. Most of us want to have unshakeable self-confidence but often feel it is slipping through our fingers somehow. The good news is that confidence is not something you are born with; it is a skill that can be learned and expanded. In this post, I will give you the five secrets to help you develop the kind of confidence that stands firm at all times. Are you ready?

    Let’s get rolling!

Secret #1: Know Yourself Inside and Out

The first step to unwavering confidence is knowing thyself really well. This means knowing your strengths and weaknesses, values, and goals. When you know who you are, then it’s less likely that what others will think or say will throw you off balance. Begin by writing down things you are good at. These may be some natural abilities, some salient personality traits, or some remarkable achievements. Do not be modest; think about all the things that make you special.

Next, it’s time to listen to your values; what in life is important? For some, it could be honesty, kindness, hard work, and so on. Living by your values helps build self-confidence because that’s the default position. Finally, set some goals for yourself. When you have direction in life, you have a purpose that can keep you confident. The goals do not need to be big; rather, you can simply set small and easy goals.

    Secret #2: Positive Self-Talk

The way you talk to yourself has the greatest effect on your confidence. Most of us have that inner critic who never fails to highlight our flaws and mistakes. If you want unshakeable confidence, then you will have to learn how to silence that critic and replace it with a supportive inner voice.

Start by becoming more aware of your thoughts. Every time you catch hold of your negative self-talk, stop right there and ask yourself, “Would I say this to a friend?” If your response is no, then it’s time to start working on changing that thought.

Replace negative thoughts with positive but realistic ones; for example, “I am going to mess this up” replaced with “I have prepared well and I will do my best.” These might not seem to make much difference the first time, but practice turning the self-talk around, and soon enough, this kind of statement will feel natural.

    Secret #3: Face Your Fears

It might sound scary but facing your fears is one of the major ways to build confidence. When you do something frightening each day, you will come to prove to yourself that you can handle any challenge.

Even very confident people get scared, sometimes. The key is not to let yourself stop doing things that matter because fear is present.

Think small. If you are afraid of speaking in public, for instance, then first give an airing to your opinion in a small group. If you are very nervous to step forward and speak to strangers, challenge yourself to speak to at least one new person each week. And remember, it’s not about making your fear disappear altogether.

Secret #4: Take Care of Your Body and Mind

Physical and mental health tremendously are the foundation of your confidence. In the case that you feel physically and mentally good, then one can face all the difficulties in life with confidence. Get enough rest. When well-rested, stress management and staying positive are easier to accomplish. Aim to have 7-9 hours of sleep nightly.

Exercise regularly. Exercise releases endorphins into your brain, which are chemicals that will help you feel good and in a good mood. Also, exercising will enhance your outlook on life and build confidence. Find something you enjoy—whether it’s walking, dancing, or playing a sport—and go out there and do it.

Eat a balanced diet. Good nutrition helps your body and mind work at peak performance. Try to eat lots of fruits, vegetables, whole grain, and lean protein. Take care of your mental and emotional health. Practices such as meditation or journaling can manage stress and boost your overall well-being.

Secret #5: Celebrate Your Successes (Big and Small )

We easily pick ourselves apart over our failures but often fail to remember to celebrate our successes. Hardwiring unshakable confidence involves acknowledging and celebrating all your wins, no matter how small they may appear.

Keep a “success journal” where you write down something that you’ve done each day that you are proud you accomplished, no matter how small, such as eating something healthful or helping a friend. Linger for a moment or two to savor the success of a given endeavor before racing off to the next challenge.

Success celebrates ability, and it breeds the kinds of confidence that you’ll need to see you through to other success on down the road. Share your successes with others. This is not pride—it is sharing and also celebrating with others the good results of hard work.

    Now What

Well, those are the five secrets, and now it’s your turn to put them to work. Remember that building confidence is the process, not the end result. It’s done step by step with practice—one little step closer to being completely unshakeable. Take one of these “success secrets” and vow to practice it for the next seven days. Maybe you’ll begin keeping a “success journal,” or perhaps pledge to face a small fear.

Whatever you choose, keep doing it for seven days in succession. Reflect at the end of the week. How are you feeling and what are the changes that have occurred in you? Use this experience as a motivating factor to keep going through your journey to build your confidence.

Remember that you hold within yourself everything it takes to build indestructible self-confidence. It’s not about becoming another person; it’s about developing into the best version of yourself. Thus, take the first step today. Your confident self of the future roots for you!
